Here are some common lawn nutrition problems and ways for you to investigate them yourself.
YELLOW OR OFF-COLOR TURF - This is commonly caused by a lack of an essential nutrient, usually nitrogen. However, too much nitrogen will kill turf and cause disease. Another factor can also be the pH of the soil.
DISEASE - Use the Macroscope to determine if disease is present. (See
Grass Section) If disease is present, sometimes common household soap will eliminate it. It is usually caused by excess moisture and nitrogen fertilizer. Try an on line consultation for more information.
THIN TURF - Thin turf can be a sign of compaction, shade, excess water and many other factors. Disease will also weaken turf and allow it to become thin. Do a thorough investigation also check the pH of the soil with a pH meter. This will tell whether nutrients are being tied up by improper soil pH.
Soil pH is the chemical condition that allows nutrients in fertilizer to release properly. If the pH is out of a good range, the fertilizer that is applied will not release properly and will not be used by the grass roots.
pH should be monitored in problem areas regularly and on all turf grass areas at least twice a year.
We offer several different types of pH Meters, two of our most popular ones are
listed here. If pH is out or range try an on-line consultation on home page.
