The Year In Review - Travels of John Mascaro

The below photo's are a photo journal for my website visitors to enjoy. I have been fortunate to have been able to travel from time to time and with each trip, I photograph turfgrass conditions that I encounter. I will continue this forum and add to the photo's (and of course soil profile samples) as I continue to travel from place to place.


I also had an opportunity to speak at the Agricultural Conference in Hawaii. This is Kapiolani Park on Oahu which overlooks Diamondhead.	John Mascaro giving a seminar on growing healthy turf in Kapiolani Park on Oahu, HI.

This is Kapolei Golf Course in Kapolei, Hawaii. Dr. Al Turgeon from Penn State University was inspecting a soil profile along with Andy Meikle, Superintendent, Dave Ringette, County Extension Agent and Warren, Andy's Assistant Superintendent.	This is the close up of the Soil Profile taken with the Mascaro Profile Sampler of the seashore Paspalum on the golf green.

Kapolei Golf Course in Kapolei, Hawaii.	This is Darryl Lambert, Superintendent of New Ewa Beach Golf Club in Ewa Beach, Hawaii. He had just taken the position and was in the middle of a long awaited renovation.

A fairway of Seashore Paspalum on New Ewa Beach Golf Club in Ewa Beach, Hawaii. The water being used was 4900 PPM Salt and the soil was clay. The superintendent was on a Gypsum program and the course was in the process of changing water sources.	This is a soil profile taken with the Mascaro Profile Sampler of the Seashore Paspalum fairway at New Ewa Beach Golf Club showing the clay soil that was used in construction.

The golf greens were constructed out of sand but were planted in Bermudagrass. There were large areas of Seashore Paspalum encroachment and the superintendent was doing a great job of keeping it all green, despite the high concentrations of salt in the irrigation water.	This is Koolau Golf Course on the 'wet' side of Oahu, HI. The mountains keep much of the rain over the course.

This is a soil profile taken with the Mascaro Profile Sampler of a golf green on Koolau Golf Course, HI. The turf was also Seashore Paspalum and construction of the greens was USGA sand / peat mix.	This is a turf farm we visited owned by Tom Staton called Quality Turf.
